February 29, 1944 — January 12, 2024

Carolyn Warner Deaton, age 79, passed away following an extended illness on January 12, 2024, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. She was born Carolyn Jean Warner on February 29, 1944, in Russell County, Virginia, to the late John Thomas Warner and Beauna Vince Tate Warner. She was preceded in death by her twin, Carol Warner; brothers, Jim and Paul Warner; and sisters, Betty Statzer, Ruth Pearrell, Sarah McDaniel, Nancy Jessee, and Dorothy (Dot) Saunders.

A lifelong resident of the Green Spring Community, Carolyn was an active member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, trustee, youth leader, choir member, and a women’s group member and leader.

After graduating from Abingdon High School (Class of 1961), Carolyn continued her education at Johnston Memorial School of Nursing, receiving her Registered Nursing degree in 1964. She began her career at Roanoke Memorial as a pediatric charge nurse before returning to the Abingdon area, working at Cedar Lawn before moving to Johnston Memorial Hospital and working in the obstetrics department. She continued her nursing career in gynecology and obstetrics with Drs. Glover and Moore. She then spent the remainder of her clinical experience at Johnston Memorial Clinic, where she loved working with the children in pediatrics. After the closing of the clinic, she finished her nursing career after 9 years as a school nurse, serving the children of Glade Spring Middle and Watauga Elementary.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Richard (Tom) Deaton, to whom she was married for 59 years. She is also survived by her daughters, Lisa Deaton Williams (Jody), Chrissy Deaton Harris (William), and Kelly Deaton Carey (Mike). She will be lovingly remembered by her only remaining brother, Guy Warner (Janie), and her beloved grandchildren, Ben Harris (Lauren), Daniel Harris, Joseph Harris, Noah Williams, Brock Carey, Joshua Williams, Taylor Carey, and Abigail Williams. She will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends. Special appreciation is extended to members of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church and community for their friendship and loving support.
