Danny Ray Bailey

Danny Ray Bailey, born August 26, 1961, in Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, in Abingdon, Virginia, following a courageous 6-year battle with cancer. Danny’s life was a testament to dedication, family, and community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.

Danny’s early years were marked by a strong commitment to education and personal growth. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1979 and soon after pursued his passion for engineering, earning a degree in Civil Engineering from Bluefield State College in 1984. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for what would become a remarkable 40-year career with the Virginia Department of Energy, where he served as a reclamation inspector for surface mining. Danny’s work was carried out with integrity, professionalism, and respect for those around him.

Beyond his career, Danny’s talents extended into the world of craftsmanship. A self-taught woodworking craftsman, he found great joy in creating walking sticks and cornhole boards. His signature touch—carving delicate dogwood flowers—spoke to his appreciation for beauty and detail. Many friends and loved ones cherish the pieces he made, each a symbol of the time, care, and love he devoted to his craft.

Danny’s passions were many. He was an avid supporter of Virginia Tech football, a true fan whose spirit enlivened every game day. He enjoyed the quiet companionship of deer hunting and the patience of fishing. Above all, he delighted in supporting his children in their pursuits, whether painting the football field at Abingdon High School or sitting on a five-gallon bucket, catching softball pitches, always present and encouraging.

Faith was central to Danny’s life. He attended Brumley Gap Methodist Church and West Main Freewill Baptist Church, where he formed lasting bonds and found spiritual fulfillment. His presence within these communities was steadfast and quietly influential.

For Danny, family was the cornerstone of his life. His beloved wife, Rhonda Bailey, stood by his side throughout life’s journey. He is survived by his children, Justin Lawson (Nina), Daniel Bailey (Landrie), and Sarah Novarro (Alex), each of whom made him immensely proud. His grandchildren—Aria Lawson, Alena Lawson, Asher Lawson, and Lyra Novarro—brought him boundless joy. Also surviving are his father, Jerry Bailey; his sister, Jennifer Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were touched by his kind spirit. Danny’s memory is also cherished by the greater circle of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his treasured mother, Wilma Faye Moore Bailey, and his grandchild, Ashton Lawson. Their memories continued to inspire and guide him throughout his life.

In reflecting upon his journey, Danny considered his children and grandchildren to be his proudest accomplishments, and their love and gratitude serve as a living tribute to the man he was.

The Bailey family extends their heartfelt thanks to friends, extended family, Caris Hospice, and Duke Cancer for the exceptional care, compassion, and support provided to Danny.

A Celebration of Life honoring Danny Ray Bailey will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 5:00 pm, at West Main Freewill Baptist Church, located at 150 Fairground Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Danny are invited to remember and celebrate his remarkable journey.
