Darrell Lee Boyd

Darrell Lee Boyd, 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer. He died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family.  Darrell attended Council High School and lived in Abingdon, Virginia for most of his life.  He was a member of Trigg Street Church of God. 

Darrell was born in Warriormine, West Virginia on October 10, 1940.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Fanning Boyd and Lula Fay Looney.  Darrell was a son, a husband, a grandfather, a child of God, and a true friend to many. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Wanda Sue Farmer Boyd; one son, Rick Boyd, and wife Vicki; one daughter, Tamie Boyd Huff, and husband Jeff; four grandsons who he was very proud of, Zachary and Ethan Boyd, Jordan and Colin Huff; one sister, Wilma Sue Boyd Aldrich; and several nephews and nieces. 

Over Darrell’s life, his love and passion was being an owner/partner/operator in the coal mining, sawmilling, and trucking business.  He was most at home on the jobsite running a piece of equipment and did so until the end.  He genuinely cared for those who worked with him and others in the industry.  He was most proud of his work team led by Darren Neece who won several Virginia and National surface reclamation awards.  His hobbies included gardening, watching NFL and NASCAR.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family would also like to stress the importance of preventive cancer screenings.

A visitation with the family will be held 1-2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Main Street location of Farris Funeral Service.  A memorial service will follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. with Dwayne Rasnake and Dwayne Dillard officiating. At a later date, a private interment will be held.
