Dolores Farmer

May 10, 1931 — November 23, 2025

Abingdon

Dolores J. Farmer, age 94, passed peacefully on November 23rd, 2025, surrounded by all seven of her children.
She was born in Garrett, Kentucky, on May 10th, 1931, to the late Hurshel and Emma Gay Gibson Johnson.

Dolores spent her early years in Bee, Virginia, later making her home in Abingdon, Virginia, where she lived since 1980. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cleason D. Farmer; her grandson, Christopher David Owens; her brothers, Beau Johnson and Mickey Johnson of Florida; and her infant sister, Sharon Johnson.

She is survived by her children Katie (Andy) Owens, Reba (the late Rodney) Lester, Sharon (the late Bob) Brewer, Pam Dodgen, Pattie (Danny) Owens, Johnny (Teresa) Farmer, and Brad (Tracie) Farmer;17 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren;her cherished sister-in-law Sue Johnson; several nieces and nephews; and she also lovingly fostered 7 children over the years.

Dolores was the last surviving member of her immediate family’s generation, a testament to a long, full, and well-lived life.

She was a homemaker throughout her life and poured her heart into her family and home. She was a talented quilter who joyfully gifted her creations to loved ones, an avid gardener who filled every season with blooming color, and a dedicated canner who preserved food and memories in equal measure. She read her Bible faithfully every night and never missed her morning crossword puzzle in the Bristol Herald Courier.

If you ever saw a white-haired woman weed-eating a steep hill along Highway 19 near Greendale, there’s a good chance it was her — working hard, smiling, and determined as ever.

Dolores was the very definition of hardworking, diligent, independent, and strong. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and matriarch who deeply loved the family she built and nurtured.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her daughter Pam, who devoted the past ten years to caring for her with unwavering love and dedication.

Special thanks also go to Dr. Bruce Higinbotham and his staff, and to the compassionate MSA Hospice nursing staff, whose kindness and support meant so much.

Visitation will be held from 4:00–6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26th, with the funeral service to follow. Pastor Steven Lester will officiate, and music will be provided by the Owens Tiller Family Group. A private burial for immediate family will take place at a later date.
