Dorothy Allen Maxwell

Abingdon, VA

Dorothy Maxwell, of Abingdon, VA formally from Richlands, VA passed away on July 19, 2023 at her residence at the age of 98. 

Born to Trimble Allen and Lona Lee Farmer Allen, Dorothy grew up in a loving household that instilled in her values of compassion and faith. As she blossomed into adulthood, she married James Maxwell, with whom she built a strong and enduring partnership. Together, they raised their children and created a warm and nurturing home.

Dorothy's proudest accomplishment was her unwavering faith, which served as a guiding light throughout her life. She was an active and oldest  member of Pleasant View Church and held great reverence for her spiritual community. Dorothy found strength in her faith, which enriched not only her own existence but also the lives of those around her.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her mother and father, Trimble Allen and Lona Lee Farmer Allen, husband James Maxwell and son, James Chesley Maxwell Jr. She is survived by her daughters Maguerite (Peggy) Hughes and husband, Robert, Clara Lee Yarber and husband Blaine, Ann Elizabeth Hillard and husband Jerry, daughter-in-law Judy Ringstaff, and sons Sidney Allen Maxwell and wife Sherri, and Robert Andrew Maxwell. Five grandsons, James Chesley Maxwell III, Cody Blaine Yarber, Brock Allen Maxwell, and Tucker Allen Maxwell, Jacob William Hillard, and one granddaughter Lesley Maxwell Page and husband John.

Outside of her family life, Dorothy immersed herself in various hobbies and interests that not only brought her joy but also had a positive impact on others. She was an esteemed member of the walking club at the Coomes Center where she derived immense pleasure from staying active and building relationships with fellow members. Dorothy's passion for bowling was evident to anyone who had the pleasure of witnessing her prowess on the lanes. Moreover, she selflessly volunteered her time at Grace Health Care, bringing smiles to the faces of patients by distributing candy and forging lasting friendships along the way.

Dorothy's life was marked by a genuine concern for the well-being of others. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she consistently went above and beyond to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched through her acts of kindness and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the charity of your personal choice.

The family will receive friends on Monday July 24th, 2023 at 11am-12:30pm at Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 12:30pm, with Rev. Larry Lusk officiating. Entombment to follow service at Green Hills Cemetery, the grandsons and sons-in-law will be serving as pallbearers.
