Earnest Cecil Hart

Earnest Cecil Hart, age 98, passed away on November 27, 2023 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, VA.

Born on February 14, 1925, in the picturesque town of Whitetop, Virginia, Earnest's early years were shaped by the rural beauty and close-knit community of the area. He was imbued with a strong work ethic from a young age, evident in his decision to leave home at the tender age of 18 in pursuit of greater opportunities.

Venturing to Washington D.C., Earnest found employment at Rosslyn Steel. It was here that he honed his skills and developed a passion for the steel industry. After two years at Fabricators in Maryland, Earnest's determination and dedication led him to Bowie Steel Co., where he would serve as a superintendent for an impressive 20 years. He retired in 1982, his exceptional leadership skills and unwavering commitment ensured the success and growth of the company.

In 1990, Earnest made the decision to embark on a new chapter in his life by moving to Abingdon, Virginia. This vibrant town became his home, providing him with tranquility and serenity amidst its scenic landscapes. Within this tight-knit community, Earnest found solace and warmth as he built lasting friendships with neighbors who soon became an extension of his own family. Earnest and his wife, Ruby, were faithful members of Damascus Road Baptist Church.

In addition to his exceptional work ethic and devotion to his family, Earnest served his country with pride and distinction. He dedicated a portion of his life to the United States Coast Guard, demonstrating his commitment to protecting and serving others.

Earnest was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Hart; his parents, Arthur and Laura Hart; three sisters, Maggie Wyatt, Edna Osborne, Parlie Hart and three brothers, Onnie Hart, Lee Hart and Charlie Hart. 

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Louise Fletcher from Port Clinton, OH and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on November 30, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Damascus Road Baptist Church in Abingdon. Family and friends are invited to gather together in remembrance and support during this time of mourning. The funeral service honoring Earnest's memory will follow on November 30th at 7:00 PM at the same location, with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. and Rev. Caleb Holman officiating. A burial service will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:00 am at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA with the Men of Damascus Road Baptist Church serving as pallbearers.

Earnest Cecil Hart's passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him most dearly. May we all take comfort in the legacy of hard work, dedication, and love that he leaves behind. As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable life of a man who lived each day with integrity, kindness, and an unwavering spirit. Earnest will forever remain in our hearts, his memory serving as a beacon of light in times of darkness.
