Edgar Benton Hutchinson, Jr., a devoted coal miner and proud U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tennessee. Born on September 25, 1945, in Buchanan County, Virginia, Edgar dedicated his life to hard work, family, and service to his country.

Edgar’s life was a testament to resilience and commitment. With a career rooted deep in the coal mines, he exemplified perseverance and strength, working tirelessly to provide for his loved ones. His service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War further underscored his dedication to duty and country, honoring the call to defend freedom with courage and honor.

He is survived by his beloved sons, Eddie (Tina) Hutchinson, Jr., and Chuck (Mary) Hutchinson; his daughter, Karen (Keith) Harris; and his treasured grandchildren: Aaron (Chastie) Hutchinson, Ashely “Dig” Hutchinson, Nikki Harris, Tyler Harris, Brandeshia Hutchinson, Tabitha (Matt) Criswell, Justin Hutchinson, and Dustin (Rebecca) Lowe. Edgar was also a proud great-grandfather to Layden, Mazie, Maddox, and Luca Hutchinson; Leland McCoy; Madison Mullins; Jacob, Jailyn, and Adalynn Criswell; Logan Stiltner; Collin Addair; and Ellie Lowe. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Margaret Ann Hutchinson.

Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Omi Hutchinson, and two sisters, Alice Robertson and Juanita Hutchinson. His life was enriched by special friend Rita Taylor, whose companionship brought comfort and joy.

The family will honor Edgar’s memory with services commencing at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel, located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210. A visitation will be held at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service on June 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Rick Whitt officiating. The celebration of Edgar’s life will conclude with a burial at Mountain Home National Cemetery, 53 Memorial Avenue, Johnson City, TN 37604, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Pallbearers for the occasion will be Aaron Hutchinson, Ashley “Dig” Hutchinson, Dustin Lowe, Matt Criswell, Jacob Criswell, Lee Rose, Logan Hutchinson, and Layden Hutchinson. Honorary pallbearers include Maddox Hutchinson, Luca Hutchinson, Leland McCoy, and Collin Addair. Flower bearers will be Madison Mullins, Jailyn Criswell, Adalynn Criswell, Mazie Hutchinson, and Ellie Lowe.
