Elvena Stuart Johnson, age 98, a cherished member of the community, passed away on January 29, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Born on November 5, 1927, in Glade Spring, Virginia, to the late, Campbell Stuart and Grace Roadman Stuart. Elvena lived a life marked by her deep faith, dedication, and a relentless kindness that touched the lives of many.
For over 25 years, Elvena worked at Bristol Hospital as a nursing assistant, where her nurturing spirit and dedication to care endeared her to both patients and colleagues alike. Her commitment extended beyond her professional life; she was a devoted member of Fairview Baptist Church, where she embraced the roles of "Mother of the Church," played piano, sang in the choir, and participated actively in the missionary society. She found joy in her faith, which provided her with guidance and strength in everything she did.
Elvena was a person who made everyone feel welcome and at ease with her kind nature. She was known for her exceptional culinary skills, particularly her ability to make the best fried chicken and rolls, an accomplishment that will surely be remembered fondly by her family and friends. Her life was guided by her favorite Bible verse, Psalm 37:25, I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." which reflected her unwavering faith and optimistic outlook on life.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Elmer Beattie Johnson; daughter, Gina Johnson Anderson; four siblings, Sally McNichols, Estelle Beverly, Elnora Austin, Perkins Stuart.
Elvena graduated from Kings Mountain in Abingdon, Virginia, and carried her education and experiences into a life filled with love for her family. She is survived by her beloved children, Cassandra Grace Johnson and Michael Elmer Johnson, who will carry her legacy forward. She also leaves behind grandchildren Archenia Johnson, Dennis Hill II (Tahirih), and Travis Hill (Karla), as well as step-grandchild Latia White. Her great-grandchildren T'Keayh Johnson, Daylin Johnson, Autumn Hill, Julian Hill, Branden Hill, and Noah Hill, along with her step-great-grandchildren Derecio White, Khalon White, Mikai White, and Adosha White, will remember her as a guiding light in their lives. Elvena's family also includes several nieces and nephews, all of whom were touched by her warmth and love.
Her life will be celebrated at Fairview Baptist Church, located at 532 Azalea Drive, Glade Spring, VA 24340. Visitation will take place on February 4, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at the same location at 12:00 PM with Rev. Danny B. Belcher officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery with Daylin Johnson, Logan Marchi, Dennis Hill II, Travis Hill, Daryl Coleman and Gary Coleman serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Bradley, Joe Bowers, Darrell Harris, Warren Lindsey, Claude Branch and Paul Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Baptist Church, 532 Azalea Drive, Glade Spring, VA 24340. The family would like to thank Mary Stump, JMH Wound Care, Progressive Care, Dr. Gerard Murphy, District Three Medical Transport and Adoration Home Health for the care they provided for Elvena.
Elvena Stuart Johnson's legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered for her dedication to her family, her unwavering faith, and her loving spirit.
