Erma Jane Mowery Wampler, age 88, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 27, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 5, 1937, in Cleveland, Tenn., to the late C.L. Mowery and Macie Bostic Mowery.
Erma and her late husband, Gene, owned and operated Wampler’s Service Station on Highway 58 for nearly 40 years. Additionally, Erma worked at Russell Manufacturing for 9½ years. She was a faithful member of Antioch House of Prayer, where she was affectionately known as “Granny Erma.” Erma and Gene loved to travel and visited nearly the entire contiguous United States. They also enjoyed international travel, having cruised to Mexico and the Bahamas. Erma loved her family and friends with all her heart and lived each day to its fullest. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Eugene Pierce Wampler; son Randy Eugene Wampler; three siblings, Don Mowery, Betty Jo Barker, and Judy Ann Mowery; and a granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Wampler.
Erma is survived by three children: Rebecca Jane Bratton and husband, Joey, of Lebanon; Kathy Eileen Vencill and husband, Delmer, of Lebanon; and Donna Marie White and husband, Walter, of Abingdon; daughter-in-law Brenda Wampler, of Kingsland, Ga. a brother-in-law, Jeffrey Wampler and wife, Vickie, of Abingdon, whom she loved as a son; two brothers, Johnny Mowery and wife, Betty, of Abingdon, and Billy Dean Mowery of Michigan; seven grandchildren, Eugenia Proffitt, Maranda Wampler, Kimberly Rhea, Sarah Vannoy, Maggie Buckles, Erica Parsons, and Levi Buckles; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and special friend Scott Thompson.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Antioch House of Prayer. The funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Antioch House of Prayer, with Pastor Jason Nunley officiating. Interment will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park, where Don Hughes, Mike Hughes, Tim Mowery, Dwayne Proffitt, Jeremy Rhea, Scott Thompson, and David Vannoy will serve as pallbearers.
