Abingdon

Gaye J. Teegarden, beloved educator and nurturing spirit, passed away on October 6, 2025, in Abingdon, Virginia, at the age of 85. Born on August 2, 1940, in Hunter, North Dakota, Gaye's journey through life was marked by her passion for art, her kindness, and her dedication to her family and community.

Gaye's educational pursuit began in her hometown where she graduated from high school. She then attended the University of North Dakota, earning a degree in Art Education. With her passion for teaching, she went on to impart her artistic knowledge in Minnesota and several other locations before moving to New Jersey, where she continued to shape young minds until her retirement.

As a Master Gardener, Gaye had a deep connection with nature and shared her love for it with many. She taught classes in local parks where she engaged children in creating toad houses from natural materials like moss, bark, and twigs. Her ability to foster creativity extended beyond her students to the adults accompanying them, making these moments enjoyable for all involved. Gaye also expressed her artistic flair through making greeting cards, which she sold at craft fairs, including the Virginia Highlands Festival.

Gaye was not only distinguished in her professional life but was also a warm and welcoming presence in her personal circles. Known for her kind nature, she always made others feel at ease. Her home was a haven of comfort; she kept candy and ice cream on hand to share with repairmen and delivery drivers who visited. Gaye had a remarkable ability to see the good in everyone and welcomed all into her home with open arms.

She shared a loving life with her late husband, Vaughn (V.R.) Teegarden, who she married shortly after college graduation, just after he returned from serving in the Navy. They shared a profound bond, growing up in the same community and embarking on life’s adventures together. Gaye cherished traveling, especially trips to Europe with her family, and she enjoyed motorcycle tours with V.R. and their friends.

In addition to her husband, Gaye was preceded in death by her parents, Levi Bell and Helen Block Bell, her stepfather, Emil Holzkamm, her brother Robert Bell.

She is survived by her sons, Vaughn Ray Richey Teegarden (Melanie) and Robert Timothy Teegarden; her brother, Tim Holzkamm; and her grandchildren, Lorelei Teegarden (Dylan) and Storm Teegarden (Xavier), sister-in-law Louise Bell, several nieces and nephews and dear friend and caregiver, Linda Biggs. Gaye’s legacy of kindness, creativity, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to cross her path.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
