Gaynell Dickey Shortt Johnson, age 70, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2020 at her home. Gaynell was born in Grundy, Va., and lived there prior to moving to Abingdon in 1978. She worked as a hair stylist and cosmetician. Gaynell will be remembered as a happy, fun-loving, full of life person who loved to dance. She was strong willed and accomplished anything that she set her mind to do, often- times making personal sacrifices to accomplish them. Gaynell loved candy and she loved her husband, Troy. She was the love of his life.
Gaynell was pre-deceased by her first husband Scotty Shortt; father Eugene Thurman Dickey; daughters Teri Ann and Kelly Gay Shortt; brothers Ronnie and Johnny Dickey.
She is survived by her mother Ethel Edwards Dickey; husband Troy Duane Johnson; daughter Angela Shortt Lester and husband Jason of Kingsport, TN; sisters Brenda Crabtree and husband Dickie of Richlands, Va., Linda Endicott of Rural Retreat, Va., Rita Willis and husband Michael of Fl, Kathy Ward of Bristol, Va., Debbie Marrs of TN, and Tammy Dickey of Staunton, Va.; brother Anthony Dickey of Abingdon; grandchildren Jessica Harosky, and Abigail Lester.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Matthew Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Terance Johnson, Travis Johnson, Mike Willis, Anthony Dickey, Jason Lester and Brian Marrs will serve as casket bearers.
The family and funeral home are committed to observing the occupancy and social distancing guidelines set forth by the State of Virginia in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
