Georgia Rhea Head Collier

d. February 20, 2010

Georgia Rhea Head Collier, 91, went home to the Lord on February 20, 2010, with her loved ones by her side. She was the firstborn of the late Henderson H. and Amanda Kress Head. She was preceded in death by her daughter Darryl Louise Collier; her brother Henderson H. " Buddy" Head; and her sister Wanda Lee Head Brock.

Georgia Rhea was born in Appalachia VA, graduating from Appalachia High School and then attending Radford College. She was unable to finish college due to her father's declining health and death. She valued education and inspired her daughters to pursue their college degrees. At 19, she married the love of her life, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Collier, and worked alongside him in their furniture business. They celebrated 72 years of love and devotion on December 26, 2009.

She dearly loved Jesus, attending First Baptist Church of Gate City as long as her health permitted. She loved music and served her Lord by singing in the sanctuary choir, the handbell choir, and also teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She had a special love for her Women on Mission Circle and Sunday School Class. She was a wonderful role model in her Christian life, remaining a humble and faithful servant.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Collier, of NHC of Bristol, her daughter and son-in-love Linda and George Sample of Greeneville, TN; her daughter and son-in-love Debra and Rick Hughes of Bristol, VA; a much-loved granddaughter, Lauren Amanda Hughes of Allen, TX; her beloved sister Mabel Walker Head Sherman of Lewisville, TX; special sister-in-law Eloise Bond Head of Miami, FL, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her wonderful caregiver, Vickie Salyer, who will forever be part of her family; and two long-time friends Lois Carter and Andrell Mann of Gate City, VA.

The family would like to thank the staff of NHC Healthcare of Bristol and Broadmore Assisted Living for their compassion and care of their dear mother.

A celebration of Georgia Rhea's life will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA. Visitation will be from 1 PM until the time of the service at 3PM with Rev. Jeff DeBoard & Rev. Larry Wiley presiding. A committal service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at American Legion Cemetery, Big Stone Gap, VA.

Pallbearers will be George Sample, Rick Hughes, John Quinley, Patrick Quinley, Charles Carter, and Charles Flanary.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Gate City-Building Fund, 307 E. Jackson Street, Gate City, VA 24251.
