Hammond Lee Thomas, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on July 15, 2025, at the age of 97 in Bristol, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 7, 1928, in Fredrick, Maryland to the late Edgar Thomas and Jane Richardson Thomas. Hammond lived a life marked by his unwavering dedication to family, community, and his country.
A distinguished veteran, Hammond bravely served in the United States Marine Corps for 26 years, including notable deployments during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. His service exemplified the honor and commitment that defined his character.
After retiring from military service, Hammond found a second calling at Carter's Cabinet Shop in Roanoke, Virginia. His tenacity and passion for connection flourished further as he transitioned to his role as a fishing rod salesman for Orvis, where he was recognized with several awards for being a top salesman. Always taking the time to engage with customers, he showcased not only his expertise but also his warm and welcoming personality.
Hammond was actively involved in his community and church, serving as an usher and dedicating time to support Meals on Wheels. His kindness and ability to make those around him feel at ease were hallmarks of his nature. He was known for his great sense of humor and captivating speaking voice, often chosen to do readings at the Easter Sunrise Service at his worship place in Roanoke.
As a devoted family man, Hammond created countless memories through outdoor adventures, enjoying picnics with his family, and indulging his love of fishing and hiking. He embraced life to the fullest, even rollerblading at the spirited age of 70, showcasing his zest for life. His passion for travel and a diverse array of reading material reflected his rich appreciation for the world around him.
Hammond was preceded in death by his first wife, Joann Edwards Thomas, one brother, Mike Thomas and sister-in-law, JoAnne Thomas.
Hammond is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Rambo Thomas, with whom he shared a profound bond for 26 years. He is also survived by his children: son James A Thomas and his wife Tammy of Stuarts Draft, VA, daughter Tami Acosta and her husband Jesse of Greeneville, SC, son David E. Thomas of Richmond, VA, daughter Tami Acosta and her husband Jesse of Greeneville, SC, and step-daughter Robin Yontz and her husband Dale of Rural Retreat, VA. Additionally, he leaves behind ten grandchildren Ryan McKay, Devin Acosta, Amanda Acosta, David Acosta, Amelie Thomas, David Thomas Jr., Jarrod Thomas, Benjamin Thomas, Madison Yontz, and Dayton Yontz and four great-grandchildren, Dulcinea Acosta, Elijah Acosta, Logan McKay and Everett Thomas all of whom were touched by his love and wisdom.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Hammond’s remarkable life during the visitation on Saturday, July 19, 2025 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 pm at Fellowship Chapel located at 201 Crockett Street, Bristol, VA with Rev. Scott Price officiating. A burial will take place at Mountain Home National Cemetery on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 2:00 pm.
