Hazel Carylon Dixon

Mendota, VA

In the morning hours of December 6, 2023, Hazel Carylon (Carolyn) Lewis Dixon grasped the elusive hovering angels and was lifted to her heavenly home by angel wings!

Carolyn was born April 18, 1934, up Hobbs Hollow off of Rich Valley Road, in Washington County, Virginia. She was the second child out of seven born to Felix and Ruby Lewis.

She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1952, and married Joe Dixon, the love of her life, June 27, 1952. After starting her family, she continued her education at King College in Bristol, TN, earning a B.S. Degree in in Psychology in 1968. She worked as a Fourth Grade Teacher at Wallace Elementary School in Bristol, VA for eleven years before transferring to Hamilton Elementary School in Mendota, VA. She taught 5th, 6th &7th Grade Language Arts for thirteen years. She then was transferred back to Wallace Middle School in Bristol, VA for six years to finish out her teaching career and retire with 30 years of service with the Washington County Virginia School System.

Her years of retirement were spent reading, knitting, crocheting, quilting, gardening, riding her exercise bike, and attending church. Mrs. Dixon was a true Bible Scholar. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, having been the Adult Sunday School Teacher for several years. She also had been VBS Director and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Mendota Baptist Church in Mendota, Virginia.

Mrs. Dixon was also a Breast Cancer Survivor.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe M. Dixon, her parents, two brothers; Sgt. James Harold Lewis, and Felix Ray Lewis.

She is survived by her children Milton Dixon and wife Kathy, Randall Wayne Dixon and wife Angel, all of Bristol, VA; Sandra Dixon Armstrong of Clarksville, TN, and Patricia Dixon Statzer and husband Wayne of Mendota, VA.

She is survived by grandchildren Dub Statzer (Valerie), Angela Dixon, Matthew Statzer (Katherine Ann), Brandy Jo Dixon Mason, Sarah Statzer Vepraskas (Matt), Katie Dixon, Tony Dixon, Melissa Dixon, and Trace Dixon. Great-grandchildren are Kaleb Streit, Christian Dixon, Jessica Dixon, Logan Dixon-McNew, Kari Streit, Zachary Vepraskas, Reagan Sproles, Leah Vepraskas, Vanessa Dixon, Susanna Statzer, and Joseph Statzer.

She is also survived by sisters Edith Millard and Sue Sharrett, brothers Donald Lewis and Allan Lewis, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Statzer, Dub Statzer, Matthew Statzer, Kaleb Streit, Kari Streit, and Zachary Vepraskas.

At Carolyn's request, a graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:30 am at Hendricks Cemetery in Mendota, VA with Pastor Travis Ingle officiating. Friends are asked to arrive to the cemetery at 11:15 am.
