Hazel Elizabeth Hall of Abingdon, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. She was born in Lowesville, VA, on July 19, 1933, to the late Herman “Red” Wheeler and the late Margaret “Maggie” Wheeler.
After graduating from Fleetwood High School in Nelson County, VA, Hazel moved to Arlington, VA, to work at Capital Airlines, planning global travel arrangements for government and military personnel. She met Sgt. Fred Hall, Army, at a church singles group. They married in 1954 and spent the next 20 years raising a family and were stationed in places including Berlin, Germany; Ft. Knox, KY; and Wilmington, NC. In 1971, the family settled in Southwest VA, the last 40 years residing in Abingdon, VA. Hazel retired after 23 years managing the Lebanon Speech and Hearing Center. In her retirement, she loved serving as a long-time volunteer usher at the Barter Theatre; one year, she tallied the most hours of any volunteer. Hazel and Fred loved spending most winters in Florida, exploring Disney, enjoying life with friends, and playing miniature golf. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose unwavering faith was a major part of her life. Hazel was a long-standing member of Providence Community Church in Abingdon, VA.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Fred J. Hall; her parents; her siblings, Dale Wheeler, Herman L. Wheeler, Florence Johnson, and Jean Campbell; a granddaughter, Julia Marie Hall; and a grandson, Jared Scott Hall.
Hazel is survived by her children, Jay Hall of Wiley Ford, WV, Jane Hall of Bluff City, TN, Joy Hall (Bradford) Auerbach of Los Angeles, CA / Bend, OR, and Robert (Cheri) Hall of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren, Tyler Hall and Morgan (Brandon) Swick, Amy Williams and Chad Street, Branson (Danielle) Weeks, Carly Auerbach (Luke) Hazel, Ellie Auerbach, Olivia Hall, and Justin Hall; great-grandchildren, Karson, Sophia, Logan, Carter, Christian, Caysen, Nora, Lola, and Pierce.
