Howard Wayne Wheelock

Howard Wayne Wheelock, 87, went to be with our Lord and Savior on October 18, 2009 after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Decatur, Illinois on May 14, 1922 to the late Nathan and Grace Wheelock.

He was employed at the Kingsport Press for 19 years before moving to Springfield where he was employed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. Upon retirement he moved to Abingdon in 1989, where he spent the rest of his life.

Howard was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter "H" of Abingdon. His other enjoyments were gardening, yard work and flying. He held a commercial flying license and was a licensed television technician.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Wheelock and a sister Eunice Shipley and her husband, Cleve. He was also preceded in death by several brothers-in-laws and one sister-in-law.

Howard is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ionia "Peggy" Wheelock and a niece, Sandra Shipley of Cleveland, Tennessee. He is also survived by sister-in-law Lynda Hamm and her husband, Lanny, of Honaker and sisters-in-laws, Peggy Lester of Raleigh, NC and Betty White of Lebanon, VA. Several nieces and nephews also survive him as well as his beloved pet, Katie.

The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Pleasant View United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted immediately following visitation at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Rev. J.C. Steele and Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 11 am, Wednesday, October 21, at Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Willis, Steve Blevins, Wade Farmer, Gene Miller, Bruce Bentley and Ed McCauley. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill McCollum, Ed Moody, Lew Harvey and members of Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter "H".
