Jack Lee McClanahan

April 27, 1941 — September 21, 2025

Abingdon

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jackie Lee McClanahan, who left this world unexpectedly on September 21, 2025. Born on April 27, 1941, in Richlands, Virginia, Jackie lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was 84 years old.

Jack was the son of William H. (Bill) McClanahan and Margie Wright McClanahan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Bodie Wright. He leaves behind his two sisters, Shelia Woodyard of Hillsville, Virginia and Shirley Hall of Bristol, Virginia. Jack’s spirit and the values instilled in him by his family remained a guiding light throughout his life.

Jackie is survived by his devoted wife, Lana McClanahan, with whom he shared a beautiful love story that began in high school. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary - a testament to their enduring partnership. Together, they raised three wonderful sons: Greg McClanahan (Vicky), Pat McClanahan (Missy), and Shawn McClanahan (Jessica Jon). Jackie's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Rachel Dawson (Brandt), Eileen Alexander (Rich), Madison, Morgan, and Peyton McClanahan, as well as his two great-granddaughters, Lainey Alexander and Nora Dawson.

A proud graduate of Pearisburg High School in Giles County, Virginia, Jack embodied the spirit of hard work and dedication. He spent his career as a machinist and carpenter, ultimately retiring from Bristol Compressors. However, retirement did not suit Jack; within just two weeks, he returned to the field he loved, devoting his time to building and construction projects that benefited others in the community. His generosity and willingness to help were well-known, making him the first phone call for friends and neighbors during home emergencies or construction needs.

Jack was a valued member of Abingdon Church of Christ where he served as a deacon overseeing the building and grounds. His commitment to his faith and community was evident in his actions, embodying the values of service and kindness.

In addition to his work and community involvement, Jackie found joy in his various hobbies. He was a true “Jack” of all trades - an exceptional carpenter, a gifted woodworker, and a standout athlete. He enjoyed spending his days in the yard, turkey hunting, and volunteering for worthwhile causes. Jack was always eager to include family and friends, many of whom called him “Pop-Pop,” in his endeavors, creating lasting memories and bonds.

Jack’s wisdom and advice were ever-present, often delivered at the most unexpected times. His children fondly remember him for his teachable moments, always ready to share insights and advice, even when they weren't quite ready to hear them. He was a friend to all and skilled in so many different things.

As we gather to honor Jack’s remarkable life, we invite family and friends to join us for the visitation from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Abingdon Church of Christ with the funeral to immediately follow.
