Jack C. Phelps, Jr.

Abingdon, VA - Jack C. Phelps, Jr., passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, in Abingdon, VA, at the age of 74, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on May 21, 1952, in Bristol VA, Jack's life was marked by unwavering devotion to his loved ones and the community around him.

Throughout his life, Jack embodied kindness, strength, and integrity. Those fortunate enough to know him were continually inspired by his warm presence and thoughtful nature. Jack was a son, husband, father, brother-in-law, and valued friend who touched countless lives through the years.

A banker for over 40 years, Jack fostered numerous relationships while employed at Tri-Cities Bank, First Virginia Bank, and then First Bank & Trust. He was a devoted and active member of his community. Jack attended St. Anne’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Mountain Empire Amateur Radio Service, KD4TMI. He served his community on the Washington County Industrial Development Board, the Washington County Small Business Incubator Board, and the Alumni Board at UVA Wise,

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Eva Slagle Phelps, whose companionship and love were steadfast over the years. He leaves behind his son, Joshua Martin Phelps. Jack's extended family includes his brothers-in-law Darrell (Reva) Slagle, Tim (Mary Beth) Slagle, and Paul (Cindy) Slagle, as well as his sister-in-law Ruth (Ernie) Billings. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Each held a special place in his heart, sharing family bonds that enriched Jack's life and offered him lasting comfort.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack C. Phelps, Sr. and Ruby Mae Luchini Phelps, whose guidance and values shaped his character from an early age. He also endured the profound loss of his son, Shawn Phelps, whose memory remained with Jack every day.

Honoring Jack's request, a private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
