James Edward Evans

James Edward Evans, lovingly known as Jim, passed away on December 5, 2025, in Glade Spring, Virginia, at the age of 89. Born on February 19, 1936, in Caruthersville, Missouri, he spent his early years in Diehlstadt, where he graduated from Diehlstadt High School.

Jim devoted a significant portion of his life to serving the community. He began his career at the United States Postal Service shortly after high school, dedicating 34 years to this important role before retiring. Following his retirement, he continued to make a difference by driving a school bus for the Washington County Virginia school system for 22 years, demonstrating his commitment to the education and safety of countless children.

Those who knew Jim appreciated his warm personality. He was kind and welcoming, always making others feel at ease with his wonderful sense of humor. He cherished time spent with his family, particularly enjoying moments with his beloved wife, Kathy Ratcliffe Evans, with whom he shared 40 years of love and companionship. Together, they delighted in simple pleasures such as sitting on the front porch and taking their dog, Patch, for rides to get ice cream.

In addition to his family life, Jim enjoyed watching old westerns, with a particular fondness for "Gunsmoke," as well as boxing and MMA events on television, which brought him much enjoyment.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Slade Evans, and siblings, Brenda Hubbard, Dasima "Sissy" Bagby, Loretta Berry and Keith Evans.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; son, Daniel Evans (Kim); daughter, Jennifer Evans; stepsons, Jason Harris and Jeremy Harris (Christina); sisters, Phyllis Frayser (Ronald), Melva Thulan, and Sherry Goetz; and his grandchildren, Hunter Harris, Landon Harris, Tiffany Evans, Bo Evans, J.R. Holford, and Kirstan Sargent. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, Nicholas Ratcliffe (Regina), along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel in Abingdon, Virginia with Dennis Blazier officiating. The graveside service will take place the following day, December 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Glade Spring, those attending the graveside service are asked to be at the cemetery by 10:45 am.

Jim's family would like to thank Ballad Hospital and Ballad Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.

Jim's legacy of kindness, dedication, and humor will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His impact on the lives of his family, friends, and community will forever cherish the memories created over his remarkable lifetime.
