James Lawrence Gregory passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on March 13, 1933, James lived a full and meaningful life, marked by deep commitments to family and an enduring strength of spirit.
James was a father whose devotion and wisdom shaped the lives of his children. He is lovingly remembered by his surviving sons, Tom Gregory (Sue) of Cabot, AR, William Gregory (Dency) of Abingdon, VA, and Graham Gregory (Kathy) of Glade Spring, VA, and daughters, Arlene Stevenson (Derek) of Abingdon, VA, Suzan Thomas (Robert) of Glade Spring, VA, and Mary Gregory of Kingsport, TN; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Pete Gregory (Barbara), Buck Gregory (Anne), and Jane Young; and several nieces and nephews. His legacy of kindness and integrity remains a guiding light for them all.
James’s journey was marked not only by his achievements and milestones but also by the lasting relationships he fostered. He shared many years of cherished marriage with his beloved wife, Polly Sue Rhea Gregory, whose memory he treasured deeply following her passing. James’s heart also held memories of his late daughters, Jo Anne Davis and Carol Gregory, and his granddaughter, Bobbie Swab. Their spirits live on in the fond stories and recollections cherished by the family.
Throughout his 93 years, James Lawrence Gregory exemplified loyalty, love, and a quiet resilience. Those who had the privilege of knowing him are left with memories of his warmth, dignity, and unwavering support. His presence will be missed dearly, but his influence endures through the values and love he imparted. He enjoyed watching Westerns, Atlanta Braves baseball games, and rodeos.
The Gregory family takes comfort in recalling the many meaningful moments shared with James and extends their gratitude to those who supported him and the family throughout his life.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Aaron Heath officiating. Pallbearers will be Junior Gregory, Jamie Rust, Walker Cox, and Damon Snipes. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Large and Jerry Rhea.
James Lawrence Gregory’s memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved and knew him.
