James "Buddy" Mitchell

Abingdon, VA

James Ellington (“Buddy”) Mitchell – Buddy Mitchell, age 76, of Abingdon, VA, died on February 18, 2024, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jean Walker Kreger Mitchell; his parents, Billy Dan Mitchell of Suwanee, GA., and Frances A. "Frankie" Mitchell of Abingdon, VA.; and, sister, Donna Sue Mitchell Moore. 

Buddy is survived by his three daughters, Kathryn Kreger Mitchell of Abingdon, VA, Molly Ammons Mitchell of Alexandria, VA and Anne Walker Mitchell, of Alexandria, VA; his son, James Ellington Mitchell, Jr. (“Jimmy”) and wife, Aarin, and their two daughters, Emma Jean Mitchell and Elisabeth Bonnie Mitchell, all of Birmingham, AL; his sister, Nicki Mitchell Jenkins and husband, Brig. General (Retired) Robert G. Jenkins of Virginia; his brother, B. David Mitchell of Kansas; and several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.  

Buddy graduated from Abingdon High School in 1966, where he excelled in sports, particularly baseball, as a left-handed pitcher. His Abingdon High Most Strike-Outs in a Game record (19) remains unsurpassed. Though Buddy was scouted by the Astros and Phillies, he decided to accept a baseball scholarship to the University of Kentucky. Buddy graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1970. He then attended the University of Georgia where he received his Juris Doctor. After graduating law school, he and Jeanie returned to Abingdon to raise their family. He practiced law in Abingdon for more than 45 years. He was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church.  

The Mitchell Family wishes to thank all their friends and family who have assisted in this time of sorrow.  A private committal service will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
