John Harold “Johnny” Taylor, age 74, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, in Abingdon, Virginia. Born on August 10, 1951, Johnny led a life characterized by generosity, commitment, and a passion for his family, work and personal interests.
A graduate of Lebanon High School and Southwest Community College, Johnny dedicated his career to VDOT, where his expertise and steadfast attention to detail were fundamental in managing crucial contracts that supported Virginia’s infrastructure development. His professional life mirrored his personal nature—reliable, diligent, and marked by a genuine desire to contribute positively to those around him.
Johnny was known by all who loved him as a very generous individual, someone who extended kindness and support without expectation. Outside of his professional life, he found joy and camaraderie in golf and cheering passionately for Virginia Tech football.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Roe Taylor; his step-sons, Kent Hutton and his wife Kama, and Brian Hutton and his wife Dana; his sister, Deborah Alexander; and the step-grandchildren who called him “Papa John” — Keagan, Kolton, and Kollin Hutton. Additionally, Johnny is remembered fondly by his special niece and nephew, Karen Alexander and her special friend Frank Hutchinson, as well as Kevin Alexander; mother-in-law, Eule Roe; brother-in-law, Donnie Roe and wife Mary Alice; and sisters-in-law, Diane Whisnat and husband Chuch, and Carol Poston and husband Tracy. These relationships reflected the deep bonds he nurtured throughout his life.
