Jim Eugene Horton, a beloved member of the community, passed away on August 28, 2023, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. He was born on May 31, 1954, in Charlotte, NC. Jim lived a fulfilling life full of love, achievement, and passion.

Jim's educational journey began at Morristown High School, where he graduated with the class of 1972. Eager to expand his knowledge, he pursued further education at Walters State Community College. Eventually, Jim obtained his degree in engineering from the University of Tennessee. His commitment to education paved the way for a successful career. He was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ.

After completing his studies, Jim embarked on a career as a surveyor and engineer. His expertise and dedication made him widely respected in his field. In pursuit of his dreams and seeking new challenges, Jim established his own business - J.H. Horton & Associates Surveying & Engineering. For many years, he served the community with utmost integrity and professionalism.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim had a wide range of interests and hobbies that brought him immense joy throughout his life. One of the most cherished pastimes for Jim was riding Harley Davidson motorcycles alongside his beloved wife, Donna. The open road allowed them to create countless precious memories together.

Music was another significant aspect of Jim's life. With remarkable talent and dedication, he mastered multiple instruments such as the guitar, banjo, and steel guitar. As a professional musician, Jim had the opportunity to perform alongside esteemed artists including Janie Frickie, Johnny Paycheck, and Jerry Lee Lewis. His membership in the Ridgewood Bluegrass Band led to special recognition during the 1982 World's Fair held in Knoxville, TN. Through his music, Jim's spirit soared as he shared his passion with others.

While Jim dedicated himself to various passions and accomplishments throughout his lifetime, it was family that held the utmost significance for him. He leaves behind his loving wife, Donna Horton, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Their journey together was filled with love, understanding, and unwavering support.

In addition to his devoted spouse, Jim is survived by his stepson, Nathan Garrett Taylor (Marci), sisters Patricia Dougherty and Carolyn Vaughan, granddaughter Danica Neisius (Luke) and granddaughter Kelsey Wise, great-grandchildren, James, Collin, Stella, and Roland Neisius, several nieces and nephews and his beagle, Etta Jane.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral will follow at 3:00 pm with Minister Don Henegar officiating. The burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA. Pallbearers will be Nathan Taylor, Chad Owens, James Dawson, Patrick, Dougherty, Stephen Dougherty and Carl Brown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to: Washington County Animal Shelter, 27252 Porter Lane, Abingdon, VA 24211.
