Dr. Jim Stanley, age 88, passed away on May 5th, 2023. He was born Oct. 15, 1934, in Clintwood, VA to the late E.B. Stanley and Buena Reedy Stanley. He attended Dickenson Memorial High School in Clintwood, where he played on two state championship basketball teams. He then attended Emory & Henry College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry.
He practiced dentistry in Abingdon for 36 years. Dr. Stanley then served as the licensed dentist and instructor of the dental assistant program at the Washington County Skill Center for 14 years. He sincerely appreciated and cared for his patients and students throughout the years.
Jim loved his church and until recent months, was an active member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed being a member of the choir. Jim loved the outdoors and working in his yard. His 85th birthday was celebrated by hiking the Molly’s Knob trail with his children and grandchildren. Over the years, he enjoyed playing golf at various courses around the region with his treasured friends. He was an enthusiastic fan of Emory and Henry College and University of Tennessee sports. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends. He was unwavering in his faith and affection for his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Kyle Stanley. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Preston Stanley; his three children, Susie Riggs and husband, Jason of Salisbury, NC; Reed Stanley and wife Amanda of Lebanon, VA; and Matthew Stanley and wife Amy of Safety Harbor, FL; five grandchildren, Jaylee Stanley, Juliana Stanley, D.J. Stanley, Katelyn Stanley and Hazel Stanley; and numerous other family members.
The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service on Monday, May 8th from 5:00-7:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 9th at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Seay officiating. Burial will follow at Old Glade Presbyterian Church cemetery in Glade Spring, Va. Members of his family will serve as pall bearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church. The family would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to Jim’s doctors, nurses, Home Nursing Company and Maple Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care and support.
