Jimmy Edgar Ferguson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on January 6, 1936, in West Virginia. He passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, in Abingdon, Virginia.
Jimmy began his career in underground mining at a young age, showcasing remarkable dedication and skill in this demanding field. He went on to work for Kennametal Inc, where he initially joined as an engineer and later transitioned into sales, ultimately rising to the position of district manager. His innovative spirit was evident as he played an instrumental role in the redesign of mining bits, significantly contributing to advancements in mining technology. In addition to his corporate career, Jimmy was also the proud owner of Clinch Mountain Repair, where he used his hands-on abilities to assist others.
Jimmy carried his values of hard work and service throughout his life, including a period of honorable service in the United States Navy. He was deeply committed to his family, often engaging in holiday gatherings and showing keen interest in the activities of his children. He was known for his resourcefulness, frequently proclaiming, “I can fix that” when something was broken, a testament to his innate ability to repair almost anything put before him.
Jimmy’s culinary preferences included comfort foods such as chicken and dumplings, banana pudding, and turkey and dressing. He found joy in many pastimes, particularly repairing clocks, skillfully merging his love for mechanics with a hobby that fascinated him.
His family remembers him as a true family man. He leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy Marcum Ferguson, along with his son Harry Ferguson and his wife, Ellen and daughters Gleneda Sproles and her husband, Steven, Teresa Robinson and her husband, Terry, and Jenell Joines and her husband, Danny. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Dawn Wise, Daniel Sproles, Meagan Garrett, Jonathan Garrett, April Ferguson, and Beverly Ferguson, and took great delight in his several great-grandchildren. Jimmy is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who fondly remember his warmth and generosity.
He is predeceased by four sisters, one brother, and his grandson, Nathan Robinson.
Visitation for Jimmy will be held on November 21, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Farris Cremation & Funeral Center – Forest Hills Chapel, located at 19415 Lee HWY, Abingdon, VA 24210. The funeral service will take place the following day, November 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the same location, with burial to follow at 3:00 PM at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
