John David Mahaffey

John David Mahaffey, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and community leader passed away suddenly on Saturday August 22 at his Abingdon home. Born on January 19, 1946, in Abingdon, Virginia, John was the son of Verna L. Mahaffey and John J. Mahaffey. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Michael and Timothy Mahaffey.

John shared 43 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Beth Maiden Mahaffey. His legacy continues through his children Erin McCarthy (Steve), Kimberley Mahaffey (Robert Votta), Amanda Mahaffey (Nathan Chapman), David Dean (Chrissy), and Elizabeth Ledford (Don). John was a proud grandfather to Megan Moore (Chris), Grace Ledford, Will Dean, Luke Ledford, Harley Votta, Harrison Dean, and Rosemarin Mahaffey Chapman, as well as a great-grandfather to Zoey and Diana Moore. He is also survived by his dear friends of over 50 years Schery and David Collins.

John's education began at Tennessee High School, graduating in 1965, followed by studies at the University of Tennessee. He later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston while working for Exxon. At 21, John's entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase his first rental property, marking the start of a successful career in real estate. He moved back to Abingdon in 1974, where he has lived and worked since. John and Beth established the Mahaffey Agency in 1983, where he loved his work and his coworkers, so much so that even at 80 years old he never retired.

A dedicated member of the Abingdon Rotary Club for over 50 years, John served as its president and was honored with the Harris Fellow award. He also held leadership roles in the Southwest Virginia Board of Realtors and contributed significantly to the Washington County Industrial Development Authority.

John's life was filled with activity. He was an avid tennis player, enjoyed biking the Virginia Creeper Trail and walking daily on the streets of Abingdon. John loved driving his 1947 International pickup truck, a nod to his first driving experience on his family farm. He found much joy at his vacation home on Harbor Island, SC, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, boating and biking, and loved sharing sunset golf cart tours with his wife, family and friends.

A man of remarkable character, John was disciplined and hardworking yet always made time for family and fun. His Abingdon home is evidence of the man he was as he built and made improvements over the years with his own hands and spent weekly time tending to his yard and home with much love and skill. Known for his humility and generosity, he was a community leader who served without seeking recognition, making everyone feel valued and loved. John found joy in many things, including carpentry, Tennessee sports, travelling, dancing and baking cheesecakes. He was a beloved man who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.

A reception to celebrate John's life will be held at the Martha Washington Inn Ballroom at noon on Saturday August 29, 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Abingdon Rotary Club or Emory and Henry College in John's memory.
