John Robert Mahala

John Robert Mahala, 69, a loving husband, father, and #1 Papaw, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 3, 1940 in North Carolina but had spent most of his life in Washington County, Virginia. John loved his family and was a great dad and papaw. He also loved to fish and hunt. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Minnie Otey Mahala; his son, John Mahala, Jr.; two sisters, Rachel Mahala and Ethel Howard and a brother, W.B. Mahala.

Survivors are his wife of 43 years, Juanita Doss Mahala; daughters, Sharon Kestner and husband, Troy of Abingdon, Rachel McCracken and husband, Eric of Piney Flats, TN and Melissa Carr and husband, Keith of Elizabethton, TN; grandchildren, Santana Warren, Keara Mahala, Alex McCracken, Conner McCracken, Owen Carr and Mahala Carr; former daughter-in-law, Jessica Carpenter of Belfast, VA; brothers, Jay Mahala and wife, Marlene of Morganton, NC, Howard Mahala of Damascus, VA, Walt Mahala and wife, Kathy of Abingdon, Earnest Mahala and wife, Judy of Check, VA, Millard Mahala and wife, Carol of Bristol, TN, Paul Mahala and wife, Judy of York, PA and Dewey and wife, Wanda of Damascus, VA; several nieces and nephews and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor John Price officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens on Lee Highway in Abingdon.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Cullop, Brian Cullop, Charlie Roark, Jason Roark, Eric Thompson and Chris Warren.

The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Farris Funeral Service.
