Larry Preston Chapman, age 77, passed away on Saturday December 27th at his residence in Abingdon, Virginia, with his beloved wife by his side.
Larry was born on November 21, 1948, the son of the late Preston Chapman and Ethel Akers Chapman. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church in Abingdon, Virginia, where his love for God and devotion to Jesus Christ were evident throughout his life. Larry rarely missed a day at church and lived his faith openly and joyfully.
A 1966 graduate of Saint Paul High School, Larry went on to attend East Tennessee State University before serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He proudly attained the rank of E-6 and served as a drill instructor. Following his military service, Larry graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He often said he was a proud Saint Paul Deacon, a proud Virginia Cavalier, and a proud American.
Larry was known for his outgoing spirit and genuine love for people. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, treating everyone as if he had known them for years. He loved to talk, laugh, and make others smile, and his warm hospitality made people feel instantly welcome. He also took great pride in keeping his cars spotless and shining, a hobby he enjoyed as much as it amused those who knew him.
Music played an important role in Larry’s life. He grew up in a musical family, sang solos in his church choir as a boy, and later performed in a popular band during the 1960s. His bandmates, known as The King Bees, were among his closest and dearest friends, and they continued to reunite over the years to sing and share memories.
Larry leaves behind his loving wife of 22 years, Nancy Elaine Chapman, the love of his life. He was the proud father of one daughter, Misti Chapman Talati of Enfield, CT, and the cherished grandfather of Kelci Talati. He is also asurvived by his sister, Donna Chapman, and nephew Jeff Molinary, both of Wytheville Virginia.
Larry is further survived by his stepchildren: Dr. Tanya Boothe and husband Dr. Robert Boothe, and their sons Trey (with wife Janice and son Drew), Gabe (with wife Ellie) and Jadon Boothe; and Dr. Justin Ferguson and wife Dr. Julie Ferguson, and their sons Jack, Max, Beau, and Marley.
Larry’s life was marked by faith, service, music, laughter, and a deep love for family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, his joy, and the way he made everyone feel like they belonged.
