CW5 Larry W. Mann

Chief Warrant Officer 5 (Ret.) Larry W. Mann, 82, passed away on September 21, 2022.  CW5 Mann was a true hero.  He served his country, family and friends with integrity, honor, deep love and devotion. 

CW 5 Larry W. Mann was born on May 28, 1940 in Scott County, Va.  He graduated from Gate City High School in 1958, furthered his education at Liberty University and holds a BS degree in Business Administration.

CW5 Mann joined the Virginia Army National Guard on June 23, 1963.  He attended basic training at Fort Jackson, SC and AIT training at Fort Campbell, KY.  Returning to the 1030th Engineer BN in Gate City, Va, he served as Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and obtained rank of Sargent First Class.  In 1975 CW5 Mann received a direct appointment as the Automotive Maintenance Warrant Officer in the 1033rd Trans Co.  In 1986, CW5 Mann transferred to the 1/111th FA, became a full-time employee for the VaARNG and the Organizational Maintenance Shop Foreman for O M S #5 Norfolk, Va.  He later served in positions as the Armament Foreman and Inspector Supervisor at the Combined Support Maintenance Shop (CSMS) in Richmond, Va.  While serving as Wheel Vehicle Maintenance Technician for the 1033rd, he was ordered to active duty in October, 1990 during Desert Storm. In returning to the states, CW5 Mann continued his military and civilian career with the VaARNG stationed at Virginia Beach, VA, with the 329th Support Group and in 1994 transferred to STARC HQs as the Staff Maintenance Officer.  In 1995, he was selected to serve as the State Organizational Maintenance Manager.  In 1997 CW5 Larry W. Mann became the third Virginia Guardsman to ever obtain the rank of CW5 and the “FIRST” Maintenance Chief Warrant Officer Five in the State.

His military decorations and awards include the Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal;  Army Reserve Components Medal (8th Award); National Defense Service Ribbon; Southwest Asia Service Medal; Armed Service Ribbon; Army Reserves Component Overseas Ribbon; Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia); His state awards include the Emergency Service Ribbon; Perfect Attendance Ribbon; Virginia Service Ribbon w37 Year Service Bar.

CW5 Mann was a Mason for more than 50 years, Catlett Masonic Lodge #35 AF & AM.

CW5 Mann was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother and grandfather who raised him to become the fine, honorable and hardworking man that he was.  He is also preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Mann.

CW5 Mann is survived by his wife, Monica Sheppard-Mann of Abingdon, stepson, Andrew Sheppard and wife, Amanda, of Abingdon, stepson, Jonathan Remines of Saltville, granddaughter, Alexius, grandson, Alexzander, and great-grandson, Salem with a great-granddaughter on the way, sons, Tim Mann and Shane Mann, 4 beloved grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and others lovingly called him, “Papaw Larry,”  and his special fur baby and companion, whom he was devoted to, Spunky.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 25, 2022, 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA. The committal will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, TN.

Our world is not the same without our hero, CW5 Mann.  We love you, always.
