Laura Duty Ryburn

Abingdon, VA – Laura Duty Ryburn, age 86, passed on Monday, September 22, 2025, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Laura was a graduate of Cleveland High School and Mary Frye’s Secretarial School. Laura began her career as a banker in 1960 with Washington County Bank and worked for Bank of Damascus and First Virginia Bank where she retired in 2003.

She was a member of Rock Spring Presbyterian Church and was active in the Meadowview Civic Club and a former board member of Meadowview First. Laura enjoyed farming, collecting antiques, and loved gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Addie Mae Owens Duty; husband, William Samuel Ryburn, Sr.; brothers, Robert Duty, John Duty, Eddie Duty, and Ronald Artrip; and sister, Frances Shoaf.

Laura is survived by her son, Samuel Ryburn, Jr. and wife Renae; sister, Thelma Wilson; grandchildren, Abigail Morrow and husband Brett, Audrey Russ and husband Dustin; aunt, Annette Price; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ryburn; special friend, Nana Bee Andis, who she considered her sister; her “favorite nurse”, Iva White; special friends, Nora Millsap, Brenda Lee, and Peggy Garrett; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2025, in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum with Rev. Scott Sikes officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service in the mausoleum.
