Leon Stacy, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, in Meadowview, Virginia. Born on May 26, 1935, in Grundy, Virginia, Leon’s life was defined by deep devotion to his family, a proud legacy of hard work, faith, and community service, and a spirit that touched all who knew him.
Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Norma Jean Deel Stacy, who was his steadfast companion and partner through many decades of marriage. His memory will be cherished by his daughters, Amy Large, Lisa Davis and her husband, Larry, and Brenda Viers; his son, Tom Stacy and his wife, Tina; and his sister, Margie Driskill. Leon’s love of family extended across generations—his grandchildren Ashlee Snyder and her husband, Justin, Justin Davis, Deidra Viers and her partner David Crabtree, Zachary Stacy and his fiancé, Amara Jumento, Jacob Stacy, and Canan Large and his partner, Kylie Nichols, and his great-grandchildren Marley Davis, Tyson Snyder, and Leah Snyder and several nieces and nephews.
Leon is preceded in death by his parents, Emory Stacy and Carrie Potter Stacy, as well as his siblings: Ida Mae Dana, Jim Stacy, Bill VanDyke, and Betty Elswick, who preceded him in death.
Leon’s life was marked by long hours of dedicated labor and service. He worked for Island Creek as a coal miner from 1967 to 1998, embodying the resilience and unwavering commitment that defined so many in his community. Even after retiring from the mines, his industriousness never left him. He found satisfaction tinkering with and repairing lawn mowers, a pursuit he kept up until 2025.
A patriot at heart, Leon proudly served his country in the United States Army, including two years in Korea. His military dedication continued as a member of the Army National Guard for twenty years, an experience from which many treasured stories sprang—stories he would share with delight, enriching gatherings with humor and vivid memories.
Faith played a central role in Leon’s life. He was a Charter Member of Victory Baptist Church in Vansant, Virginia, and remained a devoted member of Landmark Baptist Church. His spirituality was a wellspring of comfort, strength, and friendship.
Leon was a man of warmth and wit, known for his wonderful sense of humor and as a natural storyteller. He never met a stranger and was always ready to welcome new friends into his home and heart. He brought laughter to everyday moments and could bring a smile to anyone around him.
Leon enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He spent countless hours fishing and deer hunting, immersed in the beauty of the outdoors. But nothing meant more to him than his role as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He often shared that his greatest accomplishments were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, finding enduring fulfillment in their happiness and successes.
