Leonard Newton Harmon

October 30, 1936 — September 12, 2009

Leonard Newton Harmon, 72, went to be with the Lord, Saturday morning September 12, 2009 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

He was born October 30, 1936 the son of the late Turner and Leona Harmon of Lebanon, VA. After graduation from Lees McCrae College at Banner Elk, NC he began his career with the Virginia Department of Transportation as a design engineer in 1956. After 35 years of service with VDOT he retired in 1991. In retirement he split his time between farming and managing Lakefront Family Campground which he co-owned.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Stinson Harmon in 2003 and his brother Joe Harmon.

He is survived by his son, David Harmon and wife, Carla of Bristol, VA; his sisters, Mary Linkous and husband, Ted of Bristol, VA, Rachel Hawks of Kingsport, TN, Nell Hanson and husband, Paul of Albert Lea, MN, and Peggy Nininger and husband, John of Louisville, KY; sisters-in-law, Maxine Harmon of Lebanon, VA, Patty and Jessie Harmon of Lebanon, VA, Medrice Harris of Rosedale, VA and Regina Smith of Rosedale, VA; as well as his nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Todd Crusenberry, Rev. Luke Martin, and Rev. Darrell Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Paul Phipps, Ted Linkous, Paul Hanson, John Nininger, Dennis Harris, and Brian Harmon. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Forest Hills Chapel, 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA.
