Abingdon, VA - Louis Dene departed this life peacefully and at home on September 6, 2022, following a brief illness. He was a constant and unwavering source of support, guidance, and inspiration to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter, Hope Dene, his son Joseph F. Dene and wife Mary, his son Thomas Dene and wife Penelope, his grandson Thomas G. Visco and wife Sarah, his granddaughter Margaret O. Dene, his grandson Joseph B. Dene, and his granddaughters Margaret Dene and granddaughter Virginia L. Dene. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine Dene, his brother Frank Dene, his sister Katherine Dene, and his brother the Reverend Joseph Dene.

He was born in Logan County, West Virginia in 1929. He served his country in the 24th and 40th Infantry Divisions of the United States Army, and he was a combat veteran of the Korean War. After his military service he attended West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s and master's degree in economics.

He worked in industrial relations for a series of manufacturing and mining companies including FMC, Columbus Milpar, and Pittston Coal. In 1978 he was approved to read law under the supervision of a practicing attorney. After passing the bar exam and being admitted to practice as an attorney in the Commonwealth of Virginia, he opened his own law practice in Abingdon in 1982. He remained in private practice until his retirement in June of 2022. A life-long athlete and avid runner, he was a fixture on the roads and trails around Abingdon for many years.

His family and loved ones would like to express gratitude to his caregivers for the diligent care he received during his last illness. We are also grateful for the many acts of assistance and support we received, and the inquiries, condolences, and shared words of remembrance. All of this has meant a great deal to our family during this difficult time.
