,Margaret Jane Powers Houser went peacefully into the arms of Jesus at Lexington Medical Extended Care in Lexington, SC on July 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was a native of Abingdon, VA and has lived her last 12 ½ years in Lexington, SC close to her daughters.
Margaret was born at home in Abingdon, VA to the late David McHenry Powers and Adell Shortt Powers on October 22, 1933. In 1950, Margaret married the love of her life, Mason Houser, and they spent almost 48 years together. Before she married, Margaret worked at Harwood Manufacturing Company as a seamstress. After her children were grown, she worked at Glover’s Dry Cleaners as a presser and Southern States as their plant and flower specialist during the planting season. Margaret was known for her green thumb and found great joy in her beautiful yard and flowers.
She had an amazing talent for cooking and preparing delicious feasts for family and company. She was an immaculate homemaker, and indeed the heart of her home. She enjoyed hand quilting and hand painting ceramics. Her greatest ceramic creation was painting every piece of nativity. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, and sister. She was drawn to care for others and always made the time to help a friend or family. Margaret was such a kind and sweet spirited friend to all those close to her and was loved by all.
In her fifties, Margaret returned to school to further her education. She achieved her nursing credentials and worked for Washington County Health Department as a licensed private care nurse until she was almost 80. She was devoted to all her patients and they dearly loved her tender loving care and looked forward to her visits. Above all Margaret loved her Lord and cherished her family. The legacy of her sweet gentle spirit will live on. She has sown her loving seeds of kindness and generosity and watered them abundantly throughout her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Nancy Duncan (Ralph) and Jennifer McGill (Jim). She was a devoted grandmother to Brandon Duncan (Ashley), Adam Duncan (Natasha), Melissa Brown (Eric), and Mark McGill (Kristiana). She was also a devoted great-grandmother to Haleigh and Ethan Duncan, Ava and Natalia Duncan, Jameson McGill, and Hannah Brown. Margaret is survived also by brother Mack Powers and sister Violet Sue Baldwin; and nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David McHenry Powers and Adell Shortt Powers, husband, Mason Houser, sisters, Willie Mae Houser and Elizabeth Meredith, and brothers, Arthur “Bruce” Powers and Billy Powers.
Margaret was a faithful member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church (formerly named Gose Baptist) since 1950. Her family finds comfort knowing that her strong faith carried her through 12 ½ years of declining health. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Lexington Medical Extended Care and MSA Hospice in Lexington, SC for the tender loving care given to Margaret during the past 12 ½ years.
