Mary Katherine Harless, 97, passed away on November 3, 2026, at her home, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories for those who knew and loved her.
Mary’s life began when she was born prematurely on February 20, 1929, in the Meadowview area while her family was completing a move from Russell County by horse and wagon. She spent most of her life in Washington County and attended Rich Valley United Methodist Church.
A 1946 graduate of Greendale High School, Mary stood just 5’1” but held her own as a point guard on the basketball team. Games were played on outdoor courts, and many a scraped knee became part of those school-day memories. After graduation, she earned her LPN license in Pulaski. Her nursing career took her to Tennessee and West Virginia for a few years before she devoted 38 years to caring for children in the pediatrics department at Johnston Memorial Clinic.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Gertrude Caudell Harless; her brothers, Ira, Clarence, Charlie Clinton, and Warren; her sisters, Eileen Dove and Evangeline Singleton; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, carrying with her the memories of those who had gone before her.
Her sweet memory will live on in the hearts of her daughter, Sue Walton; grandson, Matthew Walton; great-grandchildren, Kristen Bowman (Matt) and Coty Walton; and great-great-grandchildren, Hunter Jordan and Carlee Bowman. She is also lovingly remembered by her special niece, Teresa Harless, and her special friend and neighbor, Joyce Sullins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to nurses Nicole and Jen with Ballad Hospice for the care and kindness they showed Mary.
Memorial donations may be made to Rich Valley United Methodist Church, 22285 Rich Valley Road, Abingdon, VA 24210.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, no services will be held.
