Mary Magdalene Johnson passed away on March 18, 2026, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on July 26, 1943, in Castlewood, Virginia, to the late Lloyd and Pauline Marshall, Mary lived a richly dedicated life marked by kindness and devotion to family.
Mary worked at Gordon Garments for almost 30 years, as well as working alongside her husband on the farm. Her hands were always busy, whether cooking for her family or crafting beautiful quilts. Mary found joy and satisfaction in the fruits of her labors. She loved working in her garden, canning vegetables, and tending to her flowers.
A lover of travel, Mary was always prepared for her next journey, delighted by the experience of discovery and new surroundings. She looked forward to Fridays at Senior Bingo, where she enjoyed fellowshipping, as well as outings with her cherished friends.
Mary's warmth and kindness extended to all creatures great and small; she adored her dog Lady, her four cats, and even her peacock—companions who enriched her days.
At her core, Mary was a kind and welcoming soul, known for making others feel at ease. Her sweet and thoughtful nature shone through in her ever-present concern for those around her. Her love of the Lord was a guiding anchor throughout her life, and her family was the center of her world. She attended church at Fleenor's Memorial Chapel.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jim" Garland Johnson.
She is survived by her treasured children—Cloe Eva Barker (Jack), Jimmy Johnson (Tammy), and Janie Miller—as well as her beloved grandchildren, LeAnne Duckett (Derek), Samantha Cox (Zach), Katie Ritter (Cameron), and Brianna Mitchell. Her legacy of love continues through her great-grandsons, Boone, Brooks, Easton, and Parker, along with a new grandson expected in August. Mary also leaves behind her sisters, Ruth Massie and Mae Baker-Holbrook (Freddy), and her brother, Claude Marshall (Brenda), along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel, located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m., with Pastor Roger Ball officiating. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA. Pallbearers will be David Keene, Derek Duckett, Zach Cox, Cameron Ritter, Anthony Johnson, and Jimmy Johnson.
Mary Magdalene Johnson’s enduring spirit, gentle heart, and unwavering love touched all who had the privilege to know her. Her memory will remain a cherished blessing to her family and community.
