Michael Vernon Thompson

Abingdon, VA / Advance, NC - Michael Vernon Thompson passed away on February 26, 2023, at Moses Cone Hospital with his two sons by his side.  Mike was born in Roanoke, VA, on August 25^th, 1946, the son of the late Alice Hughes Thompson and Walter Vernon Thompson. 

He is survived by his sons, Dr. Aaron Thompson and daughter-in-law Ali, and Jason Thompson and daughter-in-law Jennifer; granddaughters, Gabriella, Caroline, Emma, and twins Avery and Lily; his brothers, Tim Thompson, Don Thompson, and Greg Thompson (Jennifer); nephews, Zach Thompson (Alysia), Erik Thompson (Rebecca), Craig Thompson; nieces, Anna Thompson and Emmy Thompson; great nieces, Harper, Olivia, and Mary Cline; many wonderful and loving cousins; and special sister-in-law, Doris Quintana (William); and special brother-in-law, Claude Buckles, Jr. (Diane).

Mike attended Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church with his late wife, Donna.  He and Donna were married at Reynolds Memorial in 1965 and attended there with their sons.

He was a graduate of Abingdon High School and worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for many years, ultimately retiring as the Bristol District Assistant Right of Way Manager.  While working at VDOT he developed many great friendships that he enjoyed very much.  Mike impacted many lives with his gentle smile and wonderful sense of humor.

The family will receive friends on Friday March 3^rd, 2023, from 1:00-2:00 p.m., at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA.  Following the visitation, the funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Jerry Webb officiating.  The graveside service and burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
