Morrice (Marcie) Adele Pope Barnes passed away on October 5, 2026. She was born on February 24, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas, to the late Rudolph William Pope Sr. and Elizabeth Shirley Anne Boyd Pope. When her father was sent to serve in the Korean War, Marcie and her mother moved to her mother’s hometown of Abingdon, Virginia, where she spent her early years. Her family later relocated to Washington, D.C., where she attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School.
In 1996, Marcie moved her family to Abingdon, Virginia, and continued her education at Virginia Intermont College. Marcie was proud of her work career. She loved working as an Operations Manager at the Barter Theatre, fighting against domestic violence at Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, and teaching business courses at National College. In 2020, she retired as a Federally Certified Navigator for Enroll Virginia.
Marcie loved her family and was always ready for an adventure! She loved everything such as photography, traveling, indoor skydiving, skiing, finding the best beaches, the fastest roller coasters, playing in her garden, and hunting down lighthouses. She also loved visiting churches across the world, as well as church bells. She would spend hours inside of old churches. She enjoyed volunteering at the Barter Theatre to watch shows and help her community.
Marcie was preceded in death by her sister, Suzette Pope Brown; brother, Rudolph Pope Jr.; and her parents, Rudolph Pope Sr. and Elizabeth Pope.
Marcie is survived by her 4 children, Joshua McCree, Jasmine McCree, Brittany Barnes, and Nikolas Barnes; her 7 grandchildren, Isaac, Nevaeh, Jonae, Jaymin, Kayla, Rainia, and Xalen; and her first great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her two sisters, Angela Pope Gatlin and Donna Pope Reynolds, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Marcie’s life will be on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church,124 E. Main St., Abingdon, Virginia 24210.
