Olivia Corrine Gentry Bundy

Abingdon

On November 8, 2022 Olivia Corrine Gentry Bundy passed peacefully away in her Southwest Virginia mountain home surrounded by her closest family.

Libby was born in the mountains of Ashe County, North Carolina on July 31, 1950 to Homer Gentry and Vivian Blackburn Gentry.  Her grandfather, Ed Blackburn, a local preacher in what is now called Blackburn’s Chapel instilled a deep sense of faith in her as she was raised in the rural North Carolina high country.  She attended Beaver Creek High School in West Jefferson until her senior year when she moved with her family to Abingdon Virginia and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1968.

She studied education in college with a specialization in library science and graduated from Radford College in 1972 and returned to obtain a Masters of Education from Virginia Tech in 1998.  She has served as librarian for Cleveland Elementary School, Patrick Henry High School, E.B. Stanley Elementary and Van Pelt Elementary.

She served in many community programs including the Vestry at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, chairperson of the Friends of the Washington County Library, the St. Thomas youth group, and the Junior Women’s Club.  She was an avid tennis player, golfer and equestrian, while able. She was an inspiration to anyone that knew her.

Libby was a devoted spouse to James C. Bundy for 53 years.  She was a loving mother to her two children, Matthew Bundy and Cora Bundy Stoakley, their spouses Alison Burton Bundy and Richard Stoakley, and her grandchildren Campbell Stoakley, Henry Stoakley, Jack Bundy and Madelyn Bundy.  She was a devoted sister to Mary Gentry Bundy, Judy Gentry Harris, James Thomas Gentry, Laura Bundy Connelly, Robert Bundy, Jason Harris, Sarah Beth Gentry and Craig Connelly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington County Friends of the Library (wcpl.net/support/friends) or St. Thomas Episcopal Church (stthomasabingdon.org).

There will be a visitation with family and friends on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the Forest Hills event center, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon from 3 pm to 6 pm.  A private family service will be held at a later date.
