Paul Douglas Williams

February 2, 1958 — October 27, 2020

Abingdon, Va. - Paul Douglas “Doc” Williams, age 62, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, after a hard battle with his health.

He was born to the late George Carmine Williams and Ruth Ann Vowinkle Williams, on February 2, 1958, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, later moving with his family to Northeast Tennessee. Paul graduated from Sullivan East High School and King College (now King University), before receiving his M.D. (“Doc”) degree from East Tennessee State University – Quillen College of Medicine. A veteran of the United States Army, he served his country in Desert Storm.

In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by one sister, Niecie Hampton.

Paul will be missed by all who knew him, and remembered for his love for children and service to youth through umpiring and coaching Little League Baseball and Softball. He also enjoyed woodworking and Science Fiction, especially as an original “Trekkie.” Paul was a loving, caring physician who embraced his calling as a healer. His faith and spiritual strength were the guiding compass for his life. Last, but certainly not least, Paul will always be remembered as a master punster, and a man with quick wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a fondness for jokes, even in his darkest of times. He had a way to make everyone feel joy in his presence, even though he was suffering.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Karen; beloved son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Ashley; two brothers, Pat and Scott Williams; one sister, Gail Nelson and husband Danny; three cherished grandchildren, Knox, Hattie, and Barrett; a son-like nephew, Tyler Hodges; one nephew, Christopher Nelson; and one niece, Amanda Blevins.

Services are private due to current health concerns. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Paul’s name may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org).
