Abingdon, VA — Pauline Compton McClanahan, age 97, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Pauline was born in Grundy, Virginia, to the late Worley and Gusta Clevinger Compton. After marrying in 1952, she and her husband, the late Virgil McClanahan, lived in Grundy until moving to Abingdon in the mid-1970s. They enjoyed spending time in Florida and at South Holston Lake. Pauline enjoyed being outdoors, planting flowers, and taking care of her yard.
She was an avid yard sale enthusiast, enjoyed crafting, and loved to read. She also enjoyed dining out and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Green Springs Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents and husband, Pauline was preceded in death by three siblings, Edith C. Looney, Nell Newberry Matney, and Roby Compton; a nephew, Marty Newberry; and a niece, Rhonda Newberry.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Teresa Johnson and husband Mark of Keen Mountain, VA; Deborah Ratliff of Fredericksburg, VA; Jennifer Parish and husband Bill of Abingdon, VA; Denys Marcum and husband Pete of Abingdon, VA; Connie Newberry Fuller and husband Rick of Vansant, VA; Lynn Bunn and husband Ed of Abingdon, VA; Kaye Mullins and husband Jack of Bristol, VA; Patsy Ratliff and husband Danny of Bristol, VA; Britty Hunt and wife Nancy of Merritt Island, FL; and Bradley McClanahan and wife Jane of Mooresville, NC. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Kyle McClanahan and wife Sue of Grundy, VA, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Cryptside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum with Rev. Bill Parish officiating.
