Peggy Jean Newton, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on October 19, 1949, in Emory, Virginia, Peggy led a life marked by dedication to her profession, a love of learning, and devotion to family and friends.
Peggy's educational journey began at Douglas High School and Patrick Henry High School, where she laid the foundation for her future endeavors. She furthered her education at Berea College, demonstrating a commitment to personal growth and intellectual pursuit that would characterize her professional and personal life.
For 45 years, Peggy lived in New York where she served as a bank manager, a role in which she exhibited exceptional leadership, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility. Her career was distinguished by her unwavering dedication to her work and the respect she earned from colleagues and clients alike.
In 2014, Peggy moved to Glade Spring, VA. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Peggy found joy in puzzles, reading, shopping, and cooking—activities that reflected her curious mind, love of stories, and nurturing spirit. These hobbies enriched her life and brought joy to those around her.
Peggy is survived by her first cousins, Marjorie Smith, William Newton, Anthony Newton, Fred (Valeria) Rochester, Larry Rochester, and Jeffrey Rochester, who cherished her presence and valued her enduring kindness. She also held a special place in her heart for her second cousins—Dwayne Smith, Reginald Davis, Jonathan Newton, James K. Newton, Jr. and Sherylynnne Dix—whom she lovingly considered her own children, illustrating the depth of her compassion and familial bonds.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Geneva Newton, whose memory Peggy carried with her throughout her life.
Visitation with the family will be held 2:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A private interment will be held in Foster Cemetery.
