Abingdon, VA – Rev. Claudie E. Throgmartin, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at his home. Claudie grew up working in the cotton fields of Arkansas, working at times as an adult in the Singer Sewing Factory in Truman, AR. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict, serving his country for two years in Germany.
Claudie began his pastoral ministry with Helen in 1963, pastoring in Arkansas and Virgnia for nearly 60 years. They also served as house parents at Hillcrest Children’s Home in Hot Springs, AR. During his pastoral ministry, he pioneered churches and Christian Schools; developed a wonderful relationship supporting the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews; Bibles for the World which provides Bibles for the Christians in communist countries; Gideon’s International; and Mission India, which equips believers in India to minister in their own communities. He was instrumental in the startup of Chrisitan Television Station WLFG and maintained a radio and TV broadcast for many years in Blufield, VA, Richlands, VA, and St. Louis, MO.
Claudie was also a published author and wrote articles for newspapers in towns where he lived. He loved people and was a great listener. Always generous, he believed you can never outgive God. Many times, he gave not knowing how bills would be paid only to watch the Lord provide with not only enough, but more than was needed.
He adored his family and was happiest spending time with them. His favorite hobbies were his flowers and fishing. Every year his flower gardens were beautiful and abundant, and he taught each grandchild how to fish. But most of all, he loved telling others about Jesus.
Claudie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Albert and Lora Langston Throgmartin; brothers, Rev. Charles “C.A.” Throgmartin, Carl “Hillard” Throgmartin, and Leman Throgmartin; sisters, Lucille Sutterfield, Thelma Throgmartin, and Verna Mae Pollard.
He is survived by his wife of 68 wonderful years, Helen Boley Throgmartin; loving daughters, Tammy Michelle Young and husband Craig of Fall Branch, TN, and Rebecca Marlene Mowery and husband Tim of Bristol, VA; grandchildren who he loved dearly, Caleb Seth Young and fiancée Kalyn Wellesley of Johnson City, TN, Callie Elizabeth Young of Kingsport, TN, Ethan Parker Mowery of Bristol, VA, Elijah Mark Mowery of Bristol, VA; sister, Beulah Davidson and husband Robert; brother, Paul Throgmartin; and a host of nieces and nephews of whom he deeply loved.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024, in New Hope Assembly, 137 Gospel Street, Cedar Bluff, VA. Funeral services will be conducted at the church at 11:00 a.m. Friday with Pastor David Horton officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Ikey Ball, Robert Harmon, Scott White, Ethan Mowery, Elijah Mowery, and Caleb Young serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Brown, Don Case, and the members of New Hope Assembly.
The family would like to extend special thanks to MSA Hospice, especially James, Pearl, Oksana, and Lexi, New Hope Assembly, Grace Tabernacle, and Pastor David Horton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to New Hope Assembly, P.O. Box 27, Pounding Mill, VA 24637 in Rev. Throgmartin’s name.
