Robert Scott Jones

June 26, 1951 — June 24, 2025

Abingdon VA

Robert “Bob” Scott Jones passed very peacefully from his life on earth to eternal life on June 24, 2025, at Bristol Regional Medical Center with family at his side. Bob was born in Abingdon, VA on June 26, 1951. When he was six years old, his father, an engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation, moved his family to Lee County in 1957, where he lived until he moved back to Abingdon in 1988.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, D.L. and Virginia G. Jones, and three brothers, Ben A. Jones, James S. Jones, and Thomas C. Jones. He is survived by Carol F. Jones, his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years, their daughter Elizabeth J. Ramirez (Eddie) and son L. Turner Jones (Ginna), and four wonderful and amazing grandchildren, Elkin and Leighton Ramirez, and Dare and Salley Jones. He is also survived by brothers John R. Jones (Charlcia), William G. Jones (Reda), David L. Jones (Betty), and sisters Patti J. Orr (Carl), Nancy J. Williams, Charlotte J. Webb, and Barbara J. Kelly. Family was incredibly important to Bob. Some of his favorite times were the annual Jones Family Reunion and many hunting and fishing trips, including special memories with his nephews. Over the years, several people in the construction company also became more like family.

Bob attended Jonesville High School where he played football for four years. In his senior year, he was awarded All State Defensive Player of the Year and earned a football scholarship to East Tennessee State University where he also played football all four years. He graduated from ETSU in 1973 with a BS in Business Administration. He began doing small construction projects on his own in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1984, he started R.S. Jones & Associates, Inc., and in 1987, he and his wife, Carol, started Boring Contractors, Inc. (now Jones Road & Bridge) to serve Southwest Virginia. Bob managed and successfully completed hundreds of DOT road projects, utility projects, and rail projects over the last several decades. He was still involved in all aspects of the business including management, project estimation, and equipment purchases. In addition to his own business ventures, he helped organize the Old Dominion Highway Contractor’s Association and served as its president for a period of time.

Outside of work at Jones Road & Bridge, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family (mostly the grandkids!), attending auctions, and farming. Up until the time of his death, he was a very faithful and active member of Pleasant View Global Methodist Church in Abingdon. He stated his desire for any contributions made in his memory to go to a Bob Jones Memorial Fund for Children & Youth at Pleasant View Methodist: 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210; Phone (276) 628-6323.

Funeral services for Bob Jones will be Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Pleasant View Global Methodist Church with a time of visitation with the family following the service.
