Sergeant First Class David Eugene Harris, Virginia Army National Guard, Ret., passed away on July 11, 2026, in Bristol, Tennessee, at the age of 71. Born on May 24, 1955, David’s life was characterized by commitment, honor, and a steadfast sense of duty both to his family and to his country.
Throughout his life, David demonstrated unwavering integrity and a deep sense of service. His distinguished career with the U.S. Air Force and the Virginia Army National Guard is a testament to his dedication and patriotism. During his years of service, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers, serving his nation with honor until his retirement. After David’s military retirement, his government continued as the Hearing Officer for the Marion Correctional Treatment Center.
Family formed the cornerstone of David’s life. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Heather Harris, and his son, Jeff Paquette and wife Tonya. David also leaves behind his cherished granddaughter, Cassidy Paquette, whose life he enriched with love and guidance. He is remembered fondly by his siblings: brothers Doug “John” Harris and wife Freida, and Mike Harris and wife Joy; sisters Sherry Harris and Lisa Heath and husband Alan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
David’s life was also marked by loss. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Eugene Harris, his mother, Barbara Ward Brooks, and his beloved wife, Judy Ann Raffa Harris. The enduring love and memories shared with those who have passed before him continue to resonate within his family and friends.
The legacy of SFC David Eugene Harris endures, not only through his military service and the lives of his family members, but also through the many acts of kindness and camaraderie he extended to those around him. His guiding influence leaves an indelible imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service honoring David’s life and legacy will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel, located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210. Pastor Mark Baumgardner will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard.
