Sue Jones Foil, passed away at her home at English Meadows, Blacksburg, Virginia on February 13, 2026. She previously lived for many years in Abingdon, VA.
Sue was born October 31, 1933, in Enon, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Jewel and Pauline Jones and the twin sister of Paul Jones. Sue graduated from Angie High School as co-valedictorian with her twin brother. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Southeastern Louisiana University in May of 1956 and married Richard E. Foil on June 10, 1956. They moved to Bluefield, Virginia in 1963, and to Abingdon, Virginia in 1984. Sue occasionally taught business and secretarial classes until her children were grown when she returned to college for her elementary education degree. Sue taught at Graham Intermediate in Bluefield and later at Watauga Elementary, Rhea Valley and High Point in Washington County.
Sue remained active after retirement alongside Richard and friend Jean Burnette in their antique business “The Boxwood” on State Street, Bristol, VA. Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Richard, in December 2024. She is survived by: her two children, Mary Foil Russell (Ken) of Blacksburg, VA, and Richard E. Foil, Jr. (MaryBeth) of Holly Springs, N.C.; five grandchildren, Morgan Russell (Madison) of Blacksburg, VA, Elizabeth Russell of Roanoke, VA, Sarah Foil (Daniel Webster) of Walnut Cove, N.C., Richard E. Foil III and David Foil, of Holly Springs, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren.
A long-time member of Abingdon Baptist Church, Sue will be remembered there on Friday, February 20, 2026, with visitation at 1:00 pm. and service at 2:00 pm with Dr. Bill Bryan officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Garden.
