Velma Lee Statzer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, in Abingdon, VA, at the age of 93. She was born on April 29, 1933, in Clinchburg, Virginia, and throughout her life, touched the hearts of all who knew her with her gentle warmth and unwavering kindness.
Velma was the cherished daughter of the late Guy Luther Testerman and Viola Rector Testerman. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Statzer, by her brother, John Testerman and his wife Betty, and her grandson, Kevin Smith.
Velma's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her sons, Timothy Statzer and his wife Anita, Jack Statzer and his wife Sheila, and Joe Statzer and his wife Vickie; her loving daughter, Ellen Ferguson and husband, Harry; her treasured grandchildren, Christy Brooks, and Aaron Statzer, her great-grandchildren, Avery Statzer, Tripp Statzer and Kendal Brooks.
A graduate of Glade Spring High School, Velma went on to attend Emory & Henry College, pursuing her love of learning with determination and grace. Velma’s hard work and dedication were evident in her career. She owned and operated the Statzer Cafeteria from 1963 to 1981, creating a welcoming space filled with warmth and hospitality. Later, she continued her professional journey with Food City and K-VAT for over 15 years, where her reliability and considerate nature made her a valued colleague.
Never one to stand idly by Velma devoted over 20 years volunteering at Kingsway Charities, giving of her time and her heart to help others in need. Acts of service were woven into the fabric of her life, and the community benefitted greatly from her compassionate spirit.
Velma’s interests reflected her creativity and zest for life. She found delight in reading, needlework, paint by number, and working puzzles. Hers was a mind eager to explore and a heart that cherished quiet, meaningful moments. As a devoted member of Providence Community Church, Velma’s faith guided her actions and sustained her through both joyful and challenging times.
Those who knew Velma will remember her as a woman of gentle strength, wise encouragement, and steadfast love. She provided comfort and guidance to her family through the years, her compassion and enduring patience leaving an indelible mark on all she encountered.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 11:00am until 12:00 noon at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210. The funeral service will follow at 12:00with Pastor Stan Hill. Entombment will follow in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Kingsway Charities by visiting www.kingswaycharities.org.
Velma Lee Statzer will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her generosity, wisdom, and the loving legacy she leaves behind.
