Vickie Elaine Carraway Wilson

It is with broken hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Vickie Elaine Carraway Wilson, beloved wife, mother, grandmom, sister, aunt and friend. Vickie passed away just before sunrise on Saturday, August 16, 2025 surrounded by her family.

Born to the late Dave and Ophelia Carraway on August 26, 1951 in Portsmouth, Virginia, Vickie graduated from East Carolina University in February of 1973 and married the love of her life, Danny Wilson, in April of 1973.

A cherished teacher, Vickie first taught in Chesapeake, Virginia at Park Elementary and Treackle Elementary, where her mother taught before her. Vickie paused her school teachings to raise two of her own beautiful children, Stephen and Rachel, and briefly returned to substitute teaching in the Deep Creek school system before moving to Abingdon in 1989. Vickie touched the lives of countless students between 1990 and 2015 working as an Elementary Aid in the Washington County School System.

Adored by her friends and neighbors, Vickie served God and her church community through her endless devotion to Vacation Bible School, the card ministry and the choir - three things that brought her immense joy. To know her is to know how much she loved sending a card for any occasion, calls to catch up, car rides to the beach… peonies, punch, puzzles and ping-pong…calendars full of family photos, cake with ice cream and a Coke.

Vickie is survived by her husband, Danny Wilson; one son, Stephen Wilson and wife Noelle; one daughter, Rachel Schallon and husband Matthew; four grandchildren, Erin, Sarah, Isaac and Hannah Schallon; one brother, Dave Carraway Jr., and wife Bobbi; one sister, Sheila Ambrose and husband Frank. Vickie was a loving aunt and great aunt to Caitlin, Tyler, Aida, Owen, Aubyn, Matt, Avery, Nolan, Daniel, Rachel, Christopher, Kevin, Robbie, Olivia, Savannah and Macie.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Vickie at 3pm on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Reception to follow.

All friends and family will be welcome with open arms - exactly as Vickie would have wanted.
