Bristol, TN – Walter Edward Holcomb, Sr., age 92, passed on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at his home. Mr. Holcomb was a graduate of Big Creek High School in War, WV and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Pittson Coal after 45 years in the coal industry. Mr. Holcomb was a resident of Jewell Ridge for most of his life before moving to Bristol, TN in 2001 after retirement. Here he became a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Mr. Holcomb was a member of Berwind Lodge 141 A.F. & A.M. and was a Shriner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Jackson Holcomb and Goldie Lillian Withrow Holcomb; four brothers; and three sisters.
Mr. Holcomb is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Hurley Holcomb; three children, Walter Edward Holcomb, Jr. and wife Misty, Heather Barnett and husband Sam, and Christopher Holcomb; grandchildren, Kirsten Holcomb, Walter “Trey” Holcomb, III, Madison Barnett, and Paytlyn Barnett; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Mason Rites will be conducted following the visitation by Abingdon Lodge 48 A.F. & A.M. Cryptside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Green Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church Blessing Box or Breaking Bread ministries, 136 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, in Mr. Holcomb’s name.
